Congrats to Greg on his 1st ever spring gobbler! This 3 year old was a conservative 67 steps away when Greg pullled the trigger of his Mossberg 12 guage. The 2 and 3/4 inch 4x6 load did an exceptional job and after a short tracking by Greg the boss gobbler was recovered! Way to go Greg!!

Cograts to Greg Richards Brother in Law Bill Warner on his VA Longbeard. Greg and Bill were hunting together in an elevated blind when two longbeards were fooled by B-Mobile and two hen decoys. The wind blew one of the hen decoys over just as the Gobblers were running in! The Lead Tom decided something wasn't right when his soon to be girlfriend started flipping in the wind across the food plot. As he turned to run he bumped into his bearded companion and then Bills 3 and 1/2 inch shotshell! Greg was able to get a shot off at the second Gobbler but to no avail! Congrats on an exciting hunt!

Congrats to Clay Lewis on his late morning 3 year old Tom. Clay and I watched 2 Gobblers dance and gobble with 5 hens in a food plot for 2 hrs after fly down. They would not come within range! We then moved to another area where we didn't find any turkeys but we did fing 2 shed antlers. The next stop was at 11 a.m. and when a jet flew barely overhead it enticed a longbeard to gobble. We took off running and got 3 lovesick Toms fired up for a high noon showdown. Looks like Clay won the draw!

We are finally getting some relief in our part of the world! The snow is melting now and the creeks are rising! We were fortunate enough to purchase a CAT D5 Bull-Dozer in which Bob has put to good use clearing our woods roads so we can keep the deer and turkeys fed. We have fed more high protein pellet feed this year than ever before. A lot of people say..."this snow has been hard on the deer, huh?" It has but I believe our deer are in better shape than they would have been if we had a mild winter due to the amount of feed we have given them!

All you turkey hunters get ready....Gobbler Season is right around the corner!!!

G3 Gets Taken!

Congrats to Roger Osier of FL who sealed the deal with a Famous Buck we call G3. G3 was a 3.5 yr. old shooter last season and was missed while filming a show for Hunting the Country on the Outdoor Channel. Being Nationally Famous, his life expectancy was short for the 2009 season as he was shot the first week (in the antler) and almost made it through November until he met up with some does that led him past Roger at 5 pm on November 27th! Congrats on ending the G3 legacy!

Who would have thought on July 4th, 2009 with all the traffic on the River that PCO Guide Matt Aide would put musky angler Jay Dotson on the biggest musky of his life? Matt made it to the end of the day this year before taking a swim. I think the Coleman Crawdad thought a hurricane was hitting full force when Jay hooked his 45 incher while Matts favorite musky rod went in the river after his lure snagged the bottom. Picture Matt frantically splashing to save his rod while Jays adrenaline is pumping trying to land this monster fish! I think its safe to say musky fishing is hours of endless boredom broken by moments of sheer excitement! Congrats to Jay and Matt for landing 2 muskies on July 4th...who would have thought?

Our VA corn fields are looking good and should be a great draw for the deer this fall. We have a lot of corn in the big bottoms and we planted about 15 acres of corn in the mountain food plots that will be left for the deer! This picture is from the Shoe Food Plot. You can see the weeds in this picture suffering from Round-Up. The weeds will continue to die until the corn canopies over the ground and should result in a "clean" field. This will allow for the corn to be the only plant obtaining nutrients from the ground.

Late last summer into winter we couldn't buy water to put in the stream. This spring has more than made up for it as we haven't been able to fish over half of the days in the past three months due to high water! The stream seems to be leveling out as the rains have subsided for now. The days that we are able to fish have been great! David Lee of NC hunted for two days with his bow and decided it was time for the shotgun to come out! The turkeys were gobblin' good to say the least! We were set up at an intersection on a woods road with turkeys gobblin' in both directions. This guy thought he would sneak in from behind but he gobbled one too many times and we made our move....and won! Congrats David and see you and the NC boys this fall!

PCO Guide Ernie did his job and put Mr. Greg Richards from West Virginia on this beautiful gobbler that called the North side of Potts Mountain Home. Greg made a great shot after this bird ran across the clover plot to attack Ernies full strut gobbler decoy! Way to go Greg and Ernie. *As a side note, this is Ernies first successful turkey hunt of 09 and the competition is fierce between Ernie and me...the scoreboard reads Josh 3 and Ernie 1! Great Experience at the Pondersa Cabin

Congrats to the Boss Man on this fine Potts Mountain Gobbler. The turkeys were gobbling good to say the least. We heard a symphony of 15 gobblers and were serenaded for almost an hour. Three longbeards finally popped in to view and couldn't resist our full strut poser standing behind our hen decoy. Steves Benelli barked and his aim was true! Congrats Again!

Now is the time for us to keep the feeders full and start picking up sheds...we can now feed again in VA and Travis is filling up the feeders as I type!
As we reflect on the 2008 Bow Season at Potts Creek I guess the words that come to mind are "Close, but no cigar!" We had many misses, encounters and blown opportunities and some days the deer just didn't do what they were supposed to. We were very successful in our doe management program with our harvest goals met on both the VA and WV properties. With all the bucks that we had close calls with and didn't close the deal on just leaves us with one thing to say....THEY"LL BE BIGGER THIS FALL!!

The Rut Winding Down

With the rut winding down it is now time to focus on next year. Most of the does are bred and the bucks are worn out, tired and hungry. Now is the time for them to eat and us to feed them! We will start filling our feeders in WV this week and theVA feeders Jan. 4th. This high protein supplemental feed along with an abundance of wild grapes, a few scattered acorns, clear cut browse and some green clover/wheat/oats left in our food plots will pull them through the winter in healthy condition to start rapidly growing antlers in the spring. I am excited to run the cameras again and see what is out there in the late season and see what sheds we can pick up. Here are a few pics from this past week....I will be in the office on a more regular basis now and I will keep you guys posted on what is happening with the Potts Creek Deer Herd! I am also throwing in a picture of a bear that was taken at Buckhorn Saddle that is absolutely beautiful. The buck pictures are at Red Oak and White Oak....Does the infra-red 8 pointer look familiar Anthony??

Wyatts Buck

Here is Mr. Wyatt and his AWESOME 10 pointer that he caught chasing a doe across one of the buffalo pastures on Hollow Hill Farm. Wyatt is the owners' youngest son and is an unbelievably good (and lucky!) hunter for such a young man. He rifled this buck with a trusty ol' .270. As everyone knows we are a bowhunting only facility and always will be. Wyatt downed this buck on Hollow Hill Farm property - which is only hunted by the owners family and friends. We also like to use this blog as a bragging board for Wyatt and his fellow hunters!!

Congrats again to Wyatt on this awesome 10 pointer!!!!

SORRY! - It has been a while since I have posted! We have had several close encounters with BIG BUCKS but we have not put one on the ground! Last week November 17-22 was incredible! Everyone in camp saw multiple shooter bucks!! Ron, Rich, Greg, Anthony and Al from Florida and Craig from PA had tough time shooting a buck, but not a tough time seeing them!. The rut was definitely in full swing as the temps stayed in the 20's. We had a couple of misses and above are some pictures taken from the stands...one from Big Rocks and one from Red Oak Food Plot....The bobcat was from Beaver Dam Stand...
